June 2016

The sun shone on our recent 2016 Graduates as they had an amazing evening for their Graduation Banquet and Dry Grad to celebrate their academic completion. It was a great celebration with glam and glitter as students arrived on a limo bus and walked the red carpet taking photos at Minoru Chapel with family and friends.

From the gorgeous garden setting the students were escorted to the Westin Hotel. Parents, family and friends were able to enjoy great food and a student led program that highlighted some of the talented students we have in this graduation class through spoken word, a message, and singing. After dessert students made their way to the dance floor to dance with their new found freedom of looking forward to their post secondary experiences.

The evening ended with students traveling back to RCS for the Dry Grad portion of the night where parents had decorated and transformed the Secondary Campus into a forest. Students ate, signed, sung and played all night until the sun came up. The events of the evening created a suitcase full of memories for our graduates as they move beyond the RCS walls into the successful futures that await each of them. Congratulations RCS Graduates of 2016!

Track and Field

“A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever.” (Mary Lou Retton).

Memories…from team cheer bloopers: “Eagles on 2 … Eagles … oops, forgot to count!” to exuberant cheering; from dry land training to hill climbs; from personal bests to new records; from disappointments to making Provincials; from dreams not met to dreams for next year – all Track and Field memories created by a team of amazing athletes from Grades 9 through 12.

Reflecting on this past track and field season, our team sprinted out of the blocks with a record number of athletes participating, soaring high over performance expectations, and finishing with a list of achievements including, but not limited to the following:
Zones Meet (one of the qualifying competitions for Provincials)
Sr. Boys – 2nd place out of 17 teams
Jr. Girls – 4th place out of 15 teams
Jr. Boys – 11th place out of 17 teams

Hurdling over the District and Zone Meets, six athletes advanced to represent RCS at Provincials in Nanaimo:
Edmond N.  22nd Sr. Men’s High Jump; 23rd Triple Jump
Daniel W.  29th Sr. Men’s 1500m
Brandon J. 26th Sr. Men’s Steeplechase; 31st 1500m
Emma W.  21st Jr. Women’s Shot Put
Alanna B. 23rd Jr. Women’s Javelin
Honorable mention goes to Charity F. (Jr. Women’s Long Jump) – the first RCS Track and Field athlete to finish top 13th in the Province!

Special thanks is extended to Mr. Mawby, Mr. Merrell, Miss Leong, Mrs. Harbridge, Mrs. Lim, and Mr. Penner for lending their coaching expertise, as well as to Miss Contant for overseeing the administration.  Leaving a legacy of accomplishments (including competing at Provincials for the past three years), our graduating athletes, Edmond N. and Daniel W., pass on the torch to their fellow athletes; building on the momentum and positive enthusiasm from this season.

Many thanks for the privilege of coaching.  Stay on track!

Staff Updates for September

Before the school year comes to an end, I want to update you on our new hires for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. We had three teaching positions to fill with two maternity leaves and one medical leave.

I am saddened to report that our wonderful Ms. Anne Yeo will be continuing her indefinite medical leave. We are praying and hoping for her return. As we wait for her restoration we will be checking in and assessing her situation as her return will need to coincide with the beginning of a term to create the best educational transition for our students at RCS. As a result, AP English Language and Composition will now be taught by Mr. Kinniston and the English 12 module ordinarily taught by Ms. Yeo will be taught by Ms Pershin. These adjustments bring benefits to the schedule and help all classes to receive a quality education.

We are excited to introduce Mr Duncan Provan who is taking over for Mrs. Janice Chan on her maternity leave teaching all Science 9 courses. He is coming from a two year teaching position at a BC Curriculum school in Beijing.

As Mrs. Joyce Hsu is leaving for her maternity leave we have hired Ms. Miriam Severson to fill in for the Learning Assistance Coordinator position. She comes with many talents that include attending Hillsong, is a certified volleyball coach, and is a recent graduate of SFU’s Professional Development Program.

In addition, we have Ms. Jan-Lin Yong who has been with RCS since Spring Break doing a great job as a Teacher On Call; she will be teaching predominately English classes during Ms. Yeo’s medical leave. Ms. Yong has shown to be a great teacher who effectively uses her English Literature degree to reveal insight and wisdom from a Christian perspective.

I just wanted our community to be aware of some of the changes that will be occurring for the fall of 2016 and allow you the opportunity to properly welcome those new RCS staff to our community in your kind and generous manner.

Mr Jason Paul
