A Letter from the British Columbia Minister of Education
An educational shift in the British Columbia school system will begin to take place in September 2016. This shift will encompass both the public and independent school systems. So what is this shift? A new curriculum is being developed that places much more emphasis upon individual student skills and competencies and less importance upon the actual learning of content.
As our society moves more and more into the Age of Information, educators are realizing that there is a growing need for students to develop their critical thinking skills and competencies in order to deal with the ever growing volume of information. More emphasis will be placed upon how students think, internalize, and utilize the information that is readily available at their fingertips through their computers, iPads and phones. The focus will move away from the acquiring and learning of information. The new curriculum will focus upon what we do with that information and how this information may be applied to the world and the culture around us.
Following is a letter from the Minister of Education, Mr. Mike Bernier. Schools in British Columbia have been requested to forward this letter to all the members of their school communities. Please read this letter so you are better informed about this new educational program and curriculum.
Mr. Roger Grose
Superintendent
