Bear Creek Run 2015

This years C.E.S.S. (Christian Elementary School Sports) Cross Country Run was on October 21, held at Bear Creek Park in Surrey. The event was a 1.8km Cross Country Run for students in grades 4 thru 7.  Students from RCS were among  the 1651 students from 20 different Christian schools.  Students trained at school in order to qualify to attend the run.  This year was extremely exciting as more students qualified than ever before, 142 students from grade 4 & 5. Way to go grade 4 & 5’s! We filled three school buses.

The day was full of fun and excitement as we had numerous top 50 finishes (with each cohort of runners consisting of around 250 participants.) Students did a truly amazing job of representing RCS, challenging themselves physically, as well as praising God through the use of their bodies.  Students were smiling as they crossed the finish line and cheering each other on throughout the entire day.

Each student who participated did a truly amazing job, trying their very best and pushing themselves.  I am so proud of each and every student who participated!

Little Eagles Preschool

Nestled in a large sunny room on the west side of the Elementary Campus is Little Eagles Preschool.  It serves children ages three and four.  Mrs. Low, Mrs. Si and Ms. Chan help with our four year olds; Mrs. Sung, Mrs. Si and Mrs. Lew help with our three year olds.  It is so delightful to see Mommy or Daddy bring their little one to learn at school either first thing in the morning or just after lunch.  The children are so excited!

Preschool children learn best by playing.  They will drive cars, build roads and bridges, play in a water table or paint a beautiful picture.  The teachers create special places for children to learn – a craft table to practice cutting, gluing, and making treasures, or the cooking/baking table to practice stirring, spreading, and scooping.   Our children have a great playground outdoors too!  If it’s raining, the small gym is there to climb and crawl and run and play.   Great learning takes place when Mom or Dad accompany their preschooler on a fieldtrip – for everyone!

Please see the photo gallery for wonderful expressions of learning through play.

Fifth Annual Christmas Cookie Decorating Extravaganza

For the fifth year in a row, the students in RCS will be starting off December decorating a Christmas Cookie or two.

On December 4th, in their family groups, the students will be each given two cookies to decorate.

Students with gluten/dairy allergies will receive “safe” cookies too.   Students are requested to bring a bag with half a cup of assorted candies/dried fruit to decorate their cookies.  There will be no sharing of candies.  Please do not send nuts or candy with nuts.

Our decorating time goes from 8:30am to 9:10am – we will meet in the Chapel from 9:10 to 9:30am to share our Gifts for the Manger and sing some Christmas Carols.

 Gifts for the Manger

Collected from November 20 to December 4th.

For the last 15 years, RCS Elementary Campus has been collecting items for the Crisis Pregnancy Centre. This  localorganization helps mothers experiencing an unplanned or crisis pregnancy. Whether it is housing, counselling or basic baby items, new mothers-to-be feel Christ’s love in a tangible way.

Each classroom will have a decorated box to collect new items that a baby could benefit from. (Gently used items can also be donated.) On December 4th, after cookie decorating (around 9:15am) our students will be able to hear about this organization, see the “mountains” of collected items, and pray for this work. A free will offering toward the Crisis Pregnancy Centre will be taken at our Christmas Concert on December 15, 2015.

Suggested items are sleepers and outfits (newborn to 12 months), undershirts, bibs, blankets, towels, washcloths, and bottles. Socks, slippers, hats, shampoo, lotions, diapers, wipes, and toys are also appreciated. Food items such as powdered formula, baby cereal and jarred baby food is perfect. Moms can receive treats too: toiletries, magazines and treats.

Thank you for your support!

Bookfair!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…Bookfair at the Elementary campus!   Anticipation built as Scholastic Books were displayed in the foyer whilst Usborne Books and Pilgrim Book and Bible were set up in the library.

Every class participated in a random class draw, with the winner able to receive a free book from Scholastic worth $10. There was also a “Guess the number of pages” in a pile of wrapped books for both primary grades and the intermediate students. There were 7 winners, each receiving a coupon for $15 to purchase books.

The greatest excitement was reserved for the winner of the $25 coupon, claimed by Rachel Helms of 4E. As teacher of the winner, Miss Epp was also thrilled to be able to choose $25 worth of books to add to her classroom library. Thank you to our parents who purchased over 150 excellent books as gifts for classroom libraries.

From the sales, the library has added many new titles, and with coupons we receive from Scholastic, teachers are going to be able to choose more titles throughout the year. It’s a delight to see so many students who love to read. We are so thankful to more than 50 parent volunteers who helped with set-up and kept things running smoothly over this 4 day event.

We’ll see you next year, same time, same place!

With our thanks,
Mrs. Greatbanks and Miss Huber
